Internet users in the US are increasingly using Facebook to show their preference for companies, although search remains the primary means for discovering information in this area.
– 75% spread positive feedback to friends when they wanted to support a business they have frequented locally.
– 40% of participants under 35 years old typically signed up as a "fan" on Facebook, including 29% of 18-24 year olds
– 52% of contributors less than 35 years old accessed at least three websites before visiting a nearby enterprise.
– Major online retailers in the US, 59% of which thought the payback from social marketing has not been proved, while 28% stated it had delivered growth.
– "What this means for small businesses on the web is that they should encourage Likes, but also round out marketing efforts to reach consumers across a variety of touchpoints."

There are a lot of numbers in this warc.com survey, but they all seem to point out what we suspected: Facebook "likes" are good, but don't mean a thing if you don't engage and do something with them.
Even in the internet age, common sense still rules.
